His Holiness Penor Rinpoche Giving WangThe main teacher of Palyul centers in the United States is His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche.

Originally from Tibet, and now based in South India, he is the 11th throneholder of the Palyul Lineage of the Nyingma tradition. His Holiness first came to the US in the 1980s, but it was not until the 1990s, as a result of the entreaties of American students, that he first requested Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche to found Palyul centers in the Americas. Now Palyul centers throughout the United States, Canada, the Carribean, and Mexico offer teachings in the Dharma including Meditation, Dzogchen, and more.

In 1998 he founded a retreat center in rural upstate New York, north of Binghamton.  Students throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico travel to the center each year for a full-month retreat that includes the Foundational Practices, Inner Heat Practice, as well as Togyal and Trekcho.

A more complete biography can be found here at the Palyul International website.

Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche by Mannie GarciaKhenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche was born in 1954 in a village near Lhakhang Dzong in the southern region of Tibet bordering Bhutan called Lhodrak. From his birth, his parents had a strong feeling that they should place him in the nearby monastery of Nub Namkha'i Nyingpo. The head lama, Namkha'i Nyingpo Rinpoche, was the tulku of one of the twenty-five disciples of Guru Padmasambhava. Along the deep Himalayan valley were many caves and holy places associated with Guru Padmasambhava and several of the great tertons who, in later generations, rediscovered his teachings. Among them were Guru Chowang, Terton Ratna Lingpa and Terton Padma Lingpa.

The village was on the main trade route from Lhasa to Bhutan and the people were relatively prosperous. By the late 1950's the communist oppression had intensified and the social structure was turned upside down. In 1962 Khenchen and his family fled through the mountains and made their way through Bhutan to India.

After arriving in India, he and his sisters were sent to a government boarding school for Tibetans in Darjeeling, West Bengal. There he began his formal education. The curriculum included the usual primary school subjects as well as English, Hindi and basic dharma teachings. At the age of ten he took the robes of a monk and received the vows of a novice (ge-tsul). He continued his education up to the eighth grade. Year after year, he was always at the head of his class.

Khenpo Tenzin NorgeyKhenpo Tenzin Norgey was assigned to the upstate New York retreat center as resident Khenpo August, 2003. He travels to lead teaching programs throughout the United States and Canada upon invitation and is available for questions on an ongoing basis. Khenpo Tenzin Norgey holds the title of Khenpo (Professor of Buddhist Studies) and has recently been a teaching professor at the Palyul Monastery in Tibet and at Ngagyur Nyingma Institute, the prestigious Buddhist studies and research center, at Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery near Mysore, India.

He was born in the Tashigang District of Bhutan in 1965. In 1986, he joined the Shedra (college) at Ngagyur Nyingma Institute. At the Institute he studied under Khenchen Pema Sherab, Khenpo Namdrol Tsering and Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso and other visiting professors, including Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok and Khenpo Pema Tsewang from Tibet.

He completed the Shedra program at the Institute in 1995 and joined the Ngagyur Nyingma Institute teaching staff, teaching there for three years. He was formally enthroned as Khenpo by His Holiness Penor Rinpoche in 1998 and was then assigned by His Holiness to teach at the Buddhist Shedra (college) at Palyul monastery in Tibet.

He has received all the major empowerments of the Rinchen Terzod, Nam Chö, Nyingthik Yabshi and Nyingma Kama from His Holiness Penor Rinpoche as well as the Mipham Kabum from His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

Because of his knowledge, experience and fluent command of the English language (and fortunately for us in the United States!), His Holiness Penor Rinpoche has assigned Khenpo Tenzin Norgey to teach students in the United States in conjunction with the ongoing U.S. teaching programs offered by Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche.
